{"id":1140,"date":"2019-07-04T18:41:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T18:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/htc.org.et\/e\/?p=1140"},"modified":"2019-07-04T18:50:08","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T18:50:08","slug":"church-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eotc-htc.org\/e\/church-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Church History"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido church is owner of several religious,\n traditional and historical heritages amongst which are buildings, rock \nhewn churches, monasteries, historical monuments, literature and \necclesiastical articles.  These are also among the wonders of the world,\n and the Cathedral is part of these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holy Trinity Cathedral is one of the foremost historical sites in Addis Abeba and apart from its historicity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is a venue of economical meetings,<\/li><li>It offers special services of ceremonies like the enthronement of Bishops, Arch Bishops and pathriarics,<\/li><li>It provides memorial national ceremonies and prayers are also held.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holy Trinity Cathedral was established on December 22, 1931, \nunder the auspices of His Imperial Majesty Haileselassie I. But during \nthe war of resistance against fascism, the construction was disrupted \nfor five years (1935 &#8211; 1940). Through the help of the Almighty, the \nconstruction had continued after liberation and was completed  in1943. \nAnd the Cathedral was officially inaugurated on January 14, 1943. The \nbuilding of the Cathedral occupies an area of 1200 square meters and it \nis 16 meters high. The graceful architectural structure of the Cathedral\n and its fabulous fine arts incredibly hard to believe that it is made \nby man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cathedral is dedicated to the memory of those patriots who took \npart during the war of liberation. It remains the burial place of \npatriots. The crypts and the graves of the Impress Menen Emperor \nHailesilasie, princes and princesses are also found in this Cathedral. \nWith in the compound of the Cathedral, the graves of his Holyness Abuna \nTeklehaimanot, Bishops and the monument of those Military and Civilian \nOfficials of His Imperial Majesty who were brutally murdered by the \nDergue are found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the order of the Majesty, further study was made by specialists\n to expand the dimension of the Cathedral to serve for more , church \nlaymen. The present structure took shape for the third time, it was in \n1964. The name of the Holy Trinity Cathedral was. bestowed by \nLikesiltanat Abba Meliektu who later became the patriaric of Ethiopia, \nAba Theophilos in 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, on the Southern side of the Cathedral, there is a \ngraceful circular church that  was founded by Emperor Minilik II in \n1887. Its former name was Mekanesilassie, and  latter  renamed   \nBealewold. Apart from these, the structure of the church is gracious and\n gravitating. Inside this stupendous church, the walls are decorated \nwith beautiful spiritual murals done by indigenous artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holy Trinity Cathedral is located in the capital city of \nEthiopia, Addis Ababa at Arat Kilo. It is also a venue of religious \nmeetings  and enthronement of patriarchs . Furthermore, it is a place \nwhere international Ecumenical meetings take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As regards to the Administration of the cathedral, from 1890 &#8211; 2007 \nabout 26 administrators were assigned. There are about 300 both \nspiritual and different administrative service men are involved. Amongst\n the Administrators of the Cathedral more than half of them were \nelevated to the rank of Arch Bishop and up to the rank of patriarch, and\n this testifies the grandeur of the Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tourism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Cathedral, there are gorgeious spiritual glass stained \npictures mirroring the history of the old and the new Testaments.  The \npictures of the old Testament covers from Adam and Eve to Kind Solomon \nand Queen Sheba.  On the contrary, the New Testament covers from the \nNativity to the Pentecost on the other, there are historical pictures \nshowing Emperor Hailessilasie hoisting the Ethiopian flag after victory \nand addressing the league of Nations in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tombs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the most inner part of the Cathedral there are two Tombs one of \nwhich is the Emperor Hailessillasie and the other one is the Empress,  \nMenen.  The Tombs reflect three historical heritages of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><strong> The top of the tombs are the obelisks of Axum-the \nmiddle ones are one of the eleven rock hewn churches of lalibela, and \nthe third one is the claw of the lion of Judah.<\/strong><\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thrones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emperor Haileselassie and the rest of his family were followers of \nthe Ethiopian Orthodox church.  Whenever the king and the Queen came to \nattend mass, they sit on their thrones.  And nobody is allowed to sit in\n any of the thrones.
