{"id":1149,"date":"2019-07-04T19:07:42","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T19:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/htc.org.et\/e\/?p=1149"},"modified":"2019-07-04T19:07:43","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T19:07:43","slug":"spiritual-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eotc-htc.org\/e\/spiritual-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Spiritual Services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the Ethiopian Orthodox Churches, there are prayers twice a day in \nthe morning and in the evening.&nbsp; After the prayers are over all churches\n remain closed, but the Cathedral being a Church and a Museum, it is \nopen all day long for visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holy Sacrifice of Liturgy-mass<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The liturgy<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>SACRED LITURGY is the very heart of Ethiopian Orthodox worship.&nbsp; All \nthe various kinds and types of Orthodox prayers and ritual cluster \naround the Sacrifice of the Mass which was instituted by the Lord the \nsame night in which He was betrayed (1 cor. 11:23-25).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liturgy is celebrated daily.&nbsp; In addition to the celebrant (main \npriest) and at least one other priest, the presence of three deacons is \nrequired.&nbsp; The Ethiopic Liturgy is an expansion of the version of St. \nMark, the rite used by the Coptic Church in Egypt.&nbsp; It is divided into \npre-anaphora and anaphora.&nbsp; Anaphora corresponds to CANON of the Mass in\n the Western Churches.&nbsp; While the Western Church has an anaphora \n(canon), the canon of the Mass with its Preface, there are fourteen \nanaphora\u2019s in the Ethiopian Liturgy.&nbsp; However, the Anaphora of the \nTwelve Apostles is the standard form in the Ethiopian Church and the \nothers are used on special days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SYNOPSIS OF THE ETHIOPIAN ORTHODOX LITURGY OF THE APOSTLES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>While the believers assemble in the church, the priest conducts the service of preparation.<\/li><li>The Introit is chanted while the bread for the consecration is \nbrought from the Bethlehem (place where wine and bread for Mass are \nprepared).&nbsp; The bread is taken in procession thrice around the altar.&nbsp; \nWine is poured into the chalice and offertory prayers are said.<\/li><li>The priest chants the Doxology which is followed by St. Basil\u2019s Prayer, the prayer of oblation and the prayer of the Veil.<\/li><li>While the people prostrate themselves the Bishop or priest says the \nprayer of Absolution which is followed by the Deacon\u2019s Litany. <\/li><li>The blessing of the Censer and offering of incense&nbsp; follows.&nbsp; An \ninvocation of the Mother of God and a praise of the Holy Trinity are \nsung. <\/li><li>The censing of the whole church and the preparatory prayer before \nthe reading of the Epistle take place at the same time.&nbsp; The Epistle \nconsists of three lections.<\/li><li>Triaging follows and the Gospel is taken around the altar.&nbsp; A litany\n is said by the assistant priest and the Gospel is read by the Bishop or\n priest.&nbsp; The Gospel is taken around to be kissed by the whole \ncongregation.<\/li><li>\u2018Missa Fidelium\u2019 begins with the priest\u2019s prayer for peace and is \nfollowed by the Deacon\u2019s Litany for all the faithful.&nbsp; The Creed is&nbsp; \nrecited by the deacon.<\/li><li>Lavabo or priest\u2019s washing of hands is followed by the \u201ckiss of peace\u201d in the form of the people bowing to each other.<\/li><li>The Anaphora proper begins with \u2018sursum corda\u2019 (Lift up Your \nhearts):&nbsp; Following the sursum corda and the Thanksgiving for Redemption\n (Preface), there are the commemoration of the saints and the \nIntercession for all the faithful. This is followed by the rest of the \nEucharistic Prayer including the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), the words \nof Institution, Anamnesis and the Epiclesis or invocation of the Holy \nSpirit for the consecration of the elements. <\/li><li>Fraction follows and the Lord\u2019s prayer (Pater Noster) is said.&nbsp; The&nbsp;\n prayer of penitence is said by the priest and the prayer of \nIntercession follows.&nbsp; The priest declares.&nbsp; \u201cHoly things to the Holy\u201d,&nbsp;\n elevates the host and communion follows.&nbsp; Prayers of Thanksgiving are \nsaid and the priest blesses and dismisses the people.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Ethiopian Orthodox Churches, there are prayers twice a day in the morning and in the evening.&nbsp; After the prayers are over all churches remain closed, but the Cathedral being a Church and a Museum, it is open all day long for visitors.
